Coral Necklace

When I was 12, maybe 13, I bowled on a team with a girl I really admired.

Not in a loud, obvious way—more like a quiet gravity. She just seemed bright in a way that I couldn't describe back then.

That year, I went to Florida on vacation.

Florida at that age felt like another planet, full of sand dollars and sunburns and strange little gift shops that smelled like salt and coconut wax.

I spent weeks thinking about what to bring back for her.

Not my parents, not my friends—her.

It had to be something beautiful, but not too beautiful. Something thoughtful, but not desperate. Something that said, "I think you're special," without me having to actually say those terrifying words.

I found a coral necklace.

Simple, delicate. The color of a soft Florida sunset.

It felt right.

I bought it, I carried it home, and immediately started panicking.

How do you give something like that when you're 12, when you don't know what you're even asking for?

I wrapped it carefully.

I handed it off with a mix of ceremony and sheepishness.

She accepted it kindly, smiled, and said thank you.

And that was it.

We never became anything more—no slow dances, no letters. Just a soft, passing friendship and a gift that probably ended up tucked away in a drawer somewhere.

But I still think about it, not because I expected something back, but because it was one of the first times I ever tried to turn a feeling into a gesture.

I think, in some strange way, that was the moment I started to understand what it meant to care without a script, or to give without a guarantee.
