Maybe Next Year...

A reflection on New Year's resolutions, aging, and the way hope changes as life becomes more complicated. The promises may grow quieter with time, but the desire to believe in another year remains.

New Year · Hope · Aging · Rituals · Resilience

You were never just a list. You were a hope ritual, a sparkler held too close to the heart. We said you aloud between bites of cold spinach dip and cheap champagne, scrawled you on napkins, journal margins, or just inside our own heads, like wishes we didn't want to jinx by writing too clearly.

You made us bold. You let us believe that time was not a thief, but a canvas. You made us architects of futures built out of calendar squares and midnight confidence.

We promised ourselves the big things once: Next year, I'll fall in love. Next year, I'll move away from this dump. Next year, I'll finally write that thing. Lose the weight. Call mom and dad. Quit the job. Become the version of me I kept squinting at in the mirror.

We believed in forward motion, in progress, in clean slates and countdowns.

But then, life. Real life. With its detours and diagnoses, its bills and bruises, its years that arrive with more funerals than parties.

And suddenly "next year" becomes a softer thing. More of a question than a promise. We don't announce it now; we murmur it. Because we've learned that some years don't ask for goals—they ask for endurance. Or surrender. Or simply, to still be here when they're done.

And yet, we make wishes. Even now. Even after all this.

Because the act of dreaming is its own kind of defiance. A dare against despair. A love letter to the part of ourselves that hasn't given up on more.

So we light a candle. We pour a drink. We take a breath. And we say it again—gently this time. More prayer than pledge: "Next year I will..." even if we don't finish the sentence. Even if we just let the words sit on our tongue like snowflakes we hope won't melt too fast.

Because hope, like grief, comes from love. And we're still loving this life. Still daring it to surprise us. We're still here. And still hoping.

This has been a love letter to a forgotten thing, and to the flicker of hope that dares to return, even after everything.
