You never left my bedroom. You lived in a desk drawer, under school papers and a sketch pad I never showed anyone. You were perfectly timed, labeled in my best handwriting.

Each track was a secret I couldn't say out loud. Not yet.

I picked songs that made me feel brave and songs that made me feel seventeen: Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., and a bootleg from a radio that had the DJ's voice at the end—which I left because it made me smile.

I even recorded the last track from inside my closet, whispering into a tiny plastic mic saying, "Hey, I made this just for you."

But I never gave it to her.

It sat in that drawer like a letter I couldn't bring myself to mail—a mix of hope and fear wrapped in tape and teenage pride.

And years later, I wonder what she would have thought. If she would have listened to it all the way through. If she'd rewind it. If she'd keep it.

I still have it. I don't play it anymore, but I feel it.

Every time I hear one of those songs in a grocery store, or at a wedding, or on some retro playlist made by a kid who wasn't even alive when it mattered.
