Nights We Lied

A nighttime escape along railroad tracks becomes a reflection on friendship, freedom, and the secret rituals of adolescence. A story about those brief years when breaking the rules sometimes meant discovering who you were becoming.

We told our parents we were sleeping over. And we weren't exactly lying. There were sleeping bags. There were snacks in a backpack. There were plans, just not the kind you share with adults.

Because the truth was sacred. The real truth. The one you whisper with your shoes tied tight under a sky you feel in your bones.

We slipped out as soon as the porch lights clicked off, hearts banging against our ribs like they were trying to break curfew too. We didn't have a destination, only a direction. Toward the tracks, always the tracks. They were our iron and stone altar, stretching into everywhere and somehow always leading us back.

The wood ties and rusted steel were slick with history, but to us, they were balance beams, ritual paths, ley lines—a test of who could walk the longest without falling. And we walked for hours, arms out, hearts loud, trying not to talk too much about the future, because the present was finally just enough.

And we found the graveyards.

You taught us reverence we didn't know we had. We didn't party there, we listened. To the wind, to the dead, to each other.

We weren't goth kids, not really. We were ghost kids. Perched on warm stones, our jeans damp with dew, telling stories we half believed and swearing we saw something move by the mausoleum.

We weren't brave, we were becoming. We dared each other to knock, to run, to sit still and feel something that wasn't tethered to school or expectation.

And in those quiet hours, with only the moon and the trees and the breath of someone you trusted by your side, we learned that lying isn't always about dishonesty. Sometimes it's about freedom, and building a truth that the world wouldn't grant you yet.

So you borrow it. Under stars, on tracks, in places people tell you to stay away from.

Those nights buzzed. Not glowed, buzzed. With youth, with fear, with the gentle aching knowledge that you were somewhere just past permission, and exactly where you needed to be.

And then... Sunrise, back inside, hair matted, shoes muddy, a grin too wide to hide.

We were never quite the same.

Because once you've walked the tracks at midnight, once you've watched your best friend try to make peace with a gravestone, once you've laughed too hard under the weight of the dark, you don't go back.

Not really, but oh how lucky we were to go at all.

Thank you, sacred lies. Thank you, sleeping bag alibis. Thank you, hushes and half-truths and full moons.

We'll never be that young again.

This has been a love letter to a forgotten thing, and to the beautiful lies that set us free, if only for one night.
