The First Fight I Lost
A childhood fight becomes an unexpected lesson in fear, resilience, and empathy. A reflection on the moments that knock away our certainty and quietly change how we move through the world.

You weren't fair. You weren't cinematic. There was no slow-motion punch or epic comeback. Just a flurry of arms. A punch I didn't see coming. A taste of blood and the flash of fear so sharp it burned itself into my bones.
You were the moment I stopped believing that being good or funny or nice meant I couldn't get hurt.
You weren't even about much. A dumb argument. Wrong place, wrong time, one too many insults traded over a kickball game, or a rumor that got too loud. But when fists came, I froze for a minute.
And you taught me what it felt like to hit the dirt, with everyone watching and no one stepping in. The sting of knuckles, the panic, the sound of your own voice breaking, not from pain, but from humiliation.
I didn't win. I didn't even get a chance to swing back. And afterward, I didn't feel tougher. I felt smaller.
But in that smallness, something grew. Not hatred, not vengeance, but clarity.
You taught me what it means to walk into a space and scan for the exits, to measure words, to know the weight behind someone's eyes before they speak. You taught me the difference between bravado and bravery. You taught me when to walk away and when I absolutely would not walk away.
And strangely, you made me kinder—not softer, but more aware. Because once you've been the one on the ground with dirt in your teeth and knees torn open, you look at other people differently, especially the ones who think they'll never fail.
So thank you, you ugly, inglorious moment. You didn't make me a man, but you stripped away something, and I've spent years building back what's worth keeping.
And now when I look at scars, I don't flinch. I nod. Because I know where I've been, and who I am because of it.
This has been a love letter to a forgotten thing, and to the moments that knocked us down, so we could figure out who we really were when we stood up.
