The Ones I Once Held

A reflection on the people we once loved, the different versions of ourselves we became beside them, and the quiet truth that a relationship doesn't have to last forever to have mattered.

I don't think I ever really knew how to let people go.

Not the ones I held. Not the ones I laid beside in silence. Or kissed across kitchen counters. Or held hands with under restaurant tables like teenagers who never grew out of the thrill.

You weren't all the one. That's not how this works. But each of you, for a while, were the one. You were the moment.

The reason I bought nicer clothes or learned to cook something impressive or finally cleaned the backseat of my car. You were the voice I wanted to hear first thing in the morning. Or the one I sent poems to without explaining them. Or the body I memorized without trying to.

I loved you differently. Some of you deeply. Some of you clumsily. Some of you with so much fear in my throat that I couldn't even say the thing I meant until after you were gone.

And I wonder now, years later, what version of me lives in your memory?

Was I kind? Was I selfish? Did I matter? Or was I just a soft shape in a story you don't tell anymore?

Some of you broke my heart. Swiftly. Cleanly. Like surgery. Some of you just faded away, the way good music does at the end of an album. No drama, no explanation, just... soft static.

Some of you I left because I was too scared to stay, too sure I'd disappoint you.

But every one of you left something behind. A fingerprint on a glass, a sweatshirt I forgot was yours, a scar I no longer resent, and a better understanding of the kind of love I could someday live up to.

So no, I'm not trying to resurrect anything. This isn't a plea. This isn't nostalgia dipped in perfume.

This is acknowledgement. A quiet bow. A whispered, "you mattered."

Because you did. Even the short ones. Even the ones that ended with slammed doors or silence or bad timing.

You taught me how to touch someone with my voice. How to soften when I wanted to be right. How to listen to someone fall asleep next to me and feel lucky just to be there.

So wherever you are, whoever you are now, thank you. For what we were. For what I got to be when I was with you.

Even if it didn't last. Even if we don't speak. Even if you barely remember my name.

This has been a love letter to a forgotten thing, and to the constellation of lives we build when we let someone in, even for a little while.
